Knife maker
About me
I set out on my journey in the art of Knifemaking when I started an apprenticeship in Fitting Turning and Machining in 1987, I was 17. I spent many hours in a tool room making tool and dies for canning and fast pack machinery in the food industry. This involved, selecting relevant Tool Steels, turning, milling and machining, Heat Treatment and final cylindrical grind to spec.
I made and sold my first knife in 1989, I then moved to the beautiful West Coast of New Zealand 33 years ago. Ive worked as a fitter in fishing trawlers, saw mills, coalmines underground and at altitude in the Stockton opencast. I've taken time to test all the local coals in my area, too many to mention. I know were the best Coking coals are found. I find myself drawn to the craft, and have been working at honing my skills ever since.
When I’m not working on new pieces, I can typically be found pursuing other artistic endeavor's like engraving, carving bone or Jade, leatherwork, and woodwork. This adoration for the art underpins my commitment to creating unique, high-quality knives, crafted to out last a lifetime.
Fusion of beauty and functionality.
The main Stainless Steels I use are Sandvik 12 C 27 and 440C ,also Swedish AEB-L which was designed for razor blade production. A new steel I've been trying out is a S.S called Nitro-V. Which is exceptionally hard at 64 Rockwell C. It comes from The New Jersey Steel Baron in the U.S.
For Carbon Steel I use AISI 1070, CK1055, which is a Spring Steel and 15n20 a Nickel Alloy steel. This Carbon Steel is hot blued to protect the blade from rust.
Damascus Steel billet's are forged by hand with the help of a Striker. The stainless steel Damascus billets are sourced overseas.
